Madeline's Story

As Alumni Director, I thought it important to sign up as SMA classmate for the years 1907 to the present. I moved to San Marcos in 1970 and worked part-time in the SMBA Business Office, Switchboard and Accounts Payable while attending San Marcos High School. In 1979, I received my Bachelor of Science from Southwest Texas State University with a major in Home Economics (Fashion Merchandising concentration) and minor in Business Administration. My first real job was Children's Clothing Buyer for Scarbrough's Department Store in Austin (1979 - 1981). I left Scarbrough's when the Blue Laws were repealed (Anyone remember the Blue Laws?) and spoke with Mr. Floyd Patterson, Jr. about working for the school on a temporary or part-time basis until I found permanent employment. The school had just moved to the new campus on Ranch Road 12 and Mr. William 'Sonny' Wright was the Director of Auxiliary Enterprises (Maintenance, Laundry, Military Supply and Bookstore). The bookstore and the snack bar were separate facilities on the new campus. Eddie Musquiz worked in the Snack Bar, which was now under the oversight of the food service. As far as I can recall, Mrs. Beatrice did not make the move to the new campus. Mrs. Erma Hamer was on medical leave. So, I was hired to set up the bookstore on the new campus and continued to work in the bookstore as Mrs. Hamer was unable to return to work. A position as the Secretary to the Financial Vice President became available soon afterwards and I accepted it. Later I returned to the Bookstore as the Assistant Manager; then became Purchasing Director. In 2005 I was offered the position as Director of Public and Alumni Relations. In 2006, with the SMBA Centennial Celebration close at hand, I became the first full-time SMBA Director of Alumni Relations. While at SMBA, I have served as Co-Sponsor for the Student Senate and organized the annual school carnival (1999-2001), Co-Sponsored the SMBA Leo Club (2001) and have been a SMBA Student Advisor (2002 to present). In 2005 and 2006...Expand for more
, I sponsored the SMBA Student Ambassador Program and chaperoned student pages to annual Baptist General Convention of Texas, organized and oversaw the Heritage Association Cottage Kitchen fund-raiser, and organized student participation in a variety of events (Homecoming, Spring Reunion, Fall and Spring Parent Day, Cottage Kitchen, Heritage Tours, etc.). In addition, I Co-Sponsored the SMBA Student Senate (2006 - 2007) and facilitated the annual Culture Fair in 2005 and 2006. During 2006 and 2007, I headed the SMBA Centennial Planning Committee. This year (2008) I organized the first SMBA Career Day. In the Community: I was active in a variety of local civic organizations and in the formation of the San Marcos High School Rattler Alumni Association. However, I ceased those activities in favor of active participation in PTO, PTSO and booster clubs while my son was in high school. In recent years, I have been active in the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Education Committee (2005 - present), San Marcos Academic Advisory Council to Gary Job Corps (2005 to present) and Leadership San Marcos (Class of 2007 graduate). I have taught Bible Class at the University Church of Christ in San Marcos for about 30 years. While I've taught classes for cradle roll through 3rd grade, my all-time favorite age to teach is 2-year olds. By May of 2007 I had experienced over a quarter of a century of Academy history and received my 25-year pin. Who would have thought that a job beginning as a temporary position would last so long? I have been blessed to work with many wonderful faculty, staff and administrators at SMBA and the alumni treat me as one of their own. If you attended or graduated from SMBA and are not currently receiving the Academy Traditions newsletter, email updates and invitations to Homecoming, Spring Reunion and other events, please send me your contact information or post an update on the Alumni pages of the Academy website. I look forward to hearing from you! Madeline De Long Director of Alumni Relations
